How to Create Labels for Cosmetics

1 Branding

Branding is the art of creating the perception of how you want to be viewed by others. To do this businesses utilize visuals, colors, fonts, copy and packaging. Your logo, website and labels will all support the values and vision of your brand.

Know who you are. What is your business? Is is light and romantic? Dark and edgy? All-natural and eco-friendly?

Make a list of the adjectives you would use to describe your brand.

Research brands in other spaces, industries and competitors that match for those same adjectives and make notes about their copywriting, fonts, colors, patterns, etc.

Begin to think about what your customer values and how you can communicate through branding in a way that they pick you over your competitors.

With this research in mind

After creating a cohesive and clear brand, find your packaging should be easy. The values and description of your brand will rule out certain packaging choices.

If you are light and airy, you will rule our black jars and bottles. Eco-friendly brands will rule out PET plastics, etc.

Once you determine the type and material for your packaging- now cost, pricing and net product weight will come in to play. Evaluate the cost to make your product per oz., plus the cost of the various packaging options.

  • The actual cost to make the product (ie. raw materials, supplies, manufacturer)

  • Shipping cost

  • Rent

  • Overhead fees (software, website, etc)

  • Operating costs to run your business

We recommend looking at a cosmetic pricing calculator. This will allow you to play with the various costs of using certain packaging. The more custom and elaborate, often the more expensive the packaging.

Label Dimensions

Once you have settled on your first round of packaging, you will need to measure for product labels. The best practice is to maximize the space of the packaging because there are few FDA Guidelines and Requirements for Cosmetics. Please read this starter guide to understand what needs to go on each unit.

You may need to add two labels on certain cosmetics, for example, one label around the jar and another on the lid to provide all the information required.

Here at Dashleigh we offer over 35 different label dimensions for cosmetic jars, tubes and bottles. Printing your own vinyl waterproof labels from home is a great and affordable way to get started.

Designing

According to a study on effective packaging design:

Attractive packaging triggered more intense activity in areas of the brain associated with impulsivity than neutral packaging.

Unattractive and attractive packaging lead to less activity in areas of the brain responsible for reflective thought than neutral packaging.

Attractive packaging triggered reward responses in the brain whereas unattractive packaging triggered areas associated with negative emotion.

As you can see from the consumer study above, the attractiveness of the design is vital in gaining attention of potential customers. Creating visually appealing branding and packaging can be a game changer when it comes to starting and growing a beauty business.

The right packaging can be both visually striking enough to beat the completition and inform the customer that you align with their personal brand. This is why knowing your customer is so important in the early stages of brand building.

At the Dashleigh template design center, we have hundreds of cosmetic templates or design families that align with most branding moods, and vibes.
